Flowering quince are incredibly cold hardy, they can take -20F. So anywhere south of Minnesota they will grow outdoors. They bloom when the snow is still falling, and that can be their only problem—when they get to growing, which is early, there can still be very deep cold snaps.
I have a chojubai for over 20 years and I am in Africa. It was growing in the shade of a big bush, actually barely seeing the sun. It flowers every month and has fruits too. I make pickle from them. I dug it out a month ago and it is still sulking. Lets hope it will survive.
They will often lose all their leaves when repotted drastically, and then re-leaf. One can also defoliate them when repotting, if the repotting is done out of season.
Our spring has just started… .so lets hope it will come to life. But for now it does not look too good. Will let you know how it goes. The base is a solid plate maybe 40 cm big.
