Black Pine: Subtle Corrections
Here’s a GIF of a small Japanese Black Pine after a couple adjustments. These are subtle, so it may take several viewings to see the final adjustments.
The GIF has 3 parts. Here’s a breakdown of the adjustments:
- Part 2: Needles pulled, and lowest right and left branches lowered
- Part 3: The crown has a peak to the right, making it lopsided; it was tucked back to center, making the tree’s foliage lower, more compact, and focused on the trunk
This tree, incidentally, has a Ponderosa Pine trunk that was grafted with two scions of Japanese Black Pine.

I really enjoy the GIF transitions, particularly when there are subtle changes like this. Thanks Michael.
Yeap but It would have been better if the pot/tree wasn’t rotating.
Oh another comment make me realise that they are also trying to show a different front, which makes one GIF too busy and fast for me.
Appreciate the observation, thanks!
Thanks Michael! Great to see you recently!
Good perspective, great work! Thank you.
Many thanks Janet!
These gifs are interesting. On the third, final picture the tree has been rotated ever so slightly so that the base looks even wider! My question is, will you repot this tree in the spring into a pot that really shows that feature off? Nice tweaking, BTW.
Thanks Lani! Currently we don’t have a great pot for this tree, but that is a thought for the future, yes-
What still mystifies me, after 40+ years of pursuing this insane art, is this; how can a common mortal get ahold of the magnificent trunked trees that you bonsai experts continually demonstrate? I drool and covet. It would take me another 80-90 years to grow a massive trunk on my thunderhead. WHERE DO I GET MATERIAL like what you work with?
